Everett Public Schools Board of Directors

A school board is a team with vision on behalf of students

Five district citizens elected by district voters serve six-year terms as members of the board of directors for Everett Public Schools. Their authority and responsibilities are established by the Washington state legislature. They act under the direction and restrictions of state law.

Collectively, a school board is responsible for establishing the mission and goals of the district, for hiring a school district superintendent, for establishing policy, and for ensuring that district tax revenue is spent legally and in the most efficient manner possible to meet the district's educational mission. School boards hold regularly scheduled, advertised meetings to conduct school district business in public. The board authorizes all of its actions by majority vote. Individual school board members have no individual authority.

A school board is responsible for governing a district through policy and procedure for delegating day-to-day management of the district to the superintendent. The school board recruits, hires and evaluates just one employee - the superintendent - and holds that superintendent responsible and accountable for progress toward meeting the district's educational mission.

School board members advocate for education at the local, state and national level and hold leadership positions in professional organizations tied to education.

The manner in which the board and the superintendent conduct their business becomes a problem-solving model for students, teachers, parents and staff. The principles the board has set for in its Board-Superintendent Operating Protocol outline a philosophy of cooperative, collaborative and consultative behavior that is agreed upon by the board and superintendent in Everett Public Schools. As members of the leadership team, the board and superintendent are committed to upholding the principles outlined in the operating protocol.
