Summer School Senior Seminar

Students considering completing Senior Seminar during the summer need to complete and submit the Senior Seminar Course Application as soon as possible to allow time for it to be reviewed by the summer school Senior Seminar instructors. The review provides helpful information to ensure the student can complete their projects in the six weeks of summer school.

Senior Seminar Frequently Asked Questions

Question #1: Am I a good candidate for Summer School Senior Seminar?

Answer: The most successful candidates are those who have already completed some planning for life after high school and already have clear ideas for their projects. Because summer school takes place over many fewer days than a regular semester, it is recommended to at least have leads on mentors as well. All candidates are asked to complete a Summer School Senior Seminar Application.

Question #2: I am a junior with a tough senior schedule, so I would like to take Senior Seminar over the summer. I am a good student who is very capable of completing work on my own. I have planned to attend camp and/or a family vacation which will mean missing several days of summer school. Can I still enroll?

Answer: Senior Seminar is a .5 credit course, not a tutorial, and involves on-going teacherstudent interaction throughout. Students are expected to attend class daily. Summer school is an added opportunity, with a dramatically shortened timeline, and it is important that students are focused on completing the course within that timeframe. If you have other opportunities that conflict with summer school, it is best to wait and enroll in Senior Seminar during the regular school year.

Question #3: I have an amazing opportunity to work intensively on my project this summer, but it may conflict with class dates and times. Is there any flexibility in the summer?

Answer: One advantage of summer school is that students may only be enrolled in one class. This allows students to concentrate on their project work. If you are concerned that intensive work on your project will conflict with the class schedule prior to enrollment, you will need to provide the details of your planned absences on the Summer School Senior Seminar Application. The application is submitted to your building CE Administrator and reviewed by a district committee. Exceptions will only be granted if the absences you are requesting are directly related to your project's learning goals. After summer school begins, you will be expected to attend class daily and any exceptions will be handled on a case-by-case basis, subject to the approval of the instructor and the Summer School Director.
