HEALTH AND FITNESS

Mission of Everett Public Schools Health and Fitness: Everett School District recognizes the connection between academic success and physical fitness among our children. Through community collaboration and partnerships, we will serve as a catalyst for change as we move toward reducing youth obesity and increasing the number of students graduating from high school empowered with strategies for staying fit for life!

SUMMARY OF PROGRAM

In the summer of 2007, the Everett School District earned the opportunity to participate in the Carol M. White Physical Education Program Grant or PEP Grant. The federal government developed and awarded this grant in response to the growing obesity epidemic plaguing the children of our country.

With the grant funding Everett Physical Education and Fitness teachers embarked on a three year process to refocus physical education on the needs of individual students and away from team sport concepts. With the help of Focused Fitness, Inc. teachers participated in regular professional development, identified baseline physical fitness tests to be used across the district, and collaborated to write a district-wide curriculum that articulates across all schools and all grade levels.

The documents enclosed in this book guide teachers toward meeting state and national standards, refocusing their instruction on the health and fitness needs of students, and helps students to become their own personal trainer.

Work will continue on this project to ensure the students of Everett receive instruction on materials that are current and relevant as time goes by.
