Who can ride a school bus?

Kindergarten through 12th-grade students who board a school bus more than one mile from school (as the crow flies) are eligible for school bus transportation to and from school. Exceptions are possible for students who live where traffic or other conditions make walking to and from school hazardous. The district uses the most recent version of the Washington State Department of Transportation's School Walk and Bike Routes: A Guide for Planning and Improving Walk and Bike to School Options for Students to help determine when a walkway is considered hazardous.

How can a family request an exception to the one-mile guideline explained above?

You may request reconsideration of your child's assigned walking route by following the 2010-11 Walking Route Reconsideration Process, completing the form which is part of the process and submitting it according to the instructions on the form and process explanation.

How is transportation impacted when the weather is bad or when there are unforeseen hazards on a bus route?

We know parents need early notice if the weather conditions might impact bus transportation or when the weather is severe enough that schools might be closed. Therefore, transportation staff routinely monitor weather forecasts and assess road safety to enact emergency communications systems as necessary. You may want to prepare for such possibilities by reading the information on the emergency closure section of this website.

What are the behavior expectations of students using district transportation?

Safety for everyone is the highest priority. Therefore, students are expected to behave in ways that maintains their safety and those of other students and adults. Behavior patterns of self-discipline, safety and regard for others include students' time to and from a bus stop and time on a school bus.

Students who ride school buses are expected to have good self-discipline. A video camera case, mounted in the bus, may contain an operational camera to help monitor the student's behavior.

What are the responsibilities of district transportation staff, and who is Durham Transportation?

District staff are responsible for scheduling and routing school buses. They also schedule buses for vocational education, athletic and extracurricular trips. District staff network with state and local officials about road construction, new housing developments and other conditions that might affect school bus routes or walking routes for students.

The district contracts with Durham Transportation for school bus drivers and buses. The drivers are not district employees, and the buses (with the exception of some special education buses, cars and vans) are not district property. The contract with Durham Transportation includes maintenance and repair of school buses and required safety and operational training for all drivers.

The following guideline is used to determine which students may ride the school bus:

Kindergarten through 12th-grade students who live more than a one mile radius from school.

We may make exceptions for students who live in areas where traffic or other conditions make walking to and from school hazardous. The district uses Washington State Department of Transportation's School Walk and Bike Routes: A Guide for Planning and Improving Walk and Bike to School Options for Students (current version) to help determine these conditions.
