World Languages in Everett Public Schools
Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The Everett Public Schools World Languages Department strives to equip students linguistically and culturally to communicate in a pluralistic global society.
By taking World Language, students learn about the language and cultures of nations and peoples around the world. Students can also fulfill minimum admission requirements for Washington State 4-year colleges and universities.
Everett Public Schools World Languages are offered at three of our four high schools. We offer French, Spanish, German.
Additionally, American Sign Language is offered through our Career and Technical Education program. American Sign Langauge fulfillsworld language universityadmission requirements at most universities. Students should inquire directly with their university of choice for specific information about World Language admission requirements.
The French, Spanish and German programs are focused on meeting 3 standards throughout the curriculum:
1. The student communicates in a second language.
Level 1 - After successfully completing the first course of secondary school world language study, the student attains a novice proficiency level. Receptive and productive communication (listening, reading, speaking and writing) reflect this proficiency.
Level 2 - After successfully completing the second course of secondary school world language study, the student attains an intermediate-low proficiency level. Receptive and productive communication (listening, reading, speaking and writing) reflects this proficiency.
Level 3 - After successfully completing the third course of secondary school world language study, the student attains an intermediate-mid proficiency level. Receptive and productive communication (listening, reading, speaking and writing) reflects this proficiency.
2. The student develops life skills relevant to community building in the second language.
Throughout secondary school world language course work, the student demonstrates an increasing awareness of how to conduct him or herself and interact with others.
3. The student makes connections in the school and community environments.
Throughout secondary school world language course work, the student connects learning in the world language class with learning in other content areas.
